UCEED Entrance Exam Notification

Admission to the Bachelor of Design (BDes) programs at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur is determined by the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). Students who passed Class XII (or equivalent) in 2024 or will appear in 2025 in any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts & Humanities) are eligible to take the UCEED 2025 exam.

UCEED Exam Pattern & Criteria

The UCEED entrance exam is a 3 hour, 300-mark paper that consists of two stages.

Part A: consists of 18 questions of 4 marks each in a Numerical Answer type format (NAT), 18 questions of up to 4 marks each in a Multiple Select Question format (MSQ), and 32 questions of 3 marks each in a Multiple Choice Question format. This section is 2.5 hours long and carries 240 marks.

Part B: This section is worth 30 minutes and 60 points. Part B consists of one drawing-based question.

UCEED Eligibility

Age Limit: The candidate must have been born on or after October 1, 1998 if they fall into the OPEN/EWS/OBC-NCL category, or on or after October 1, 1993 if they fall into the SC, ST, or PwD category.

Number of attempts: A candidate may attempt UCEED a maximum of two times in consecutive years. It should be noted that a UCEED score is only valid for one year and for admissions in the same academic year.

Qualifing Exam: To be eligible to take UCEED 2025, the candidate must have passed all subjects in the qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) in 2022 or be taking the qualifying examination for the first time in 2025. Students from all disciplines (science, commerce, and arts & humanities) are eligible.

UCEED Admission Test Syllabus

The UCEED 2025 Entrance Exam will have the following topics in each section:

Part A: 

  • Visualization and spatial ability: Pictorial and diagrammatic questions to assess understanding of the transformation and/or manipulation of 2D and 3D shapes and their spatial relationships, as well as knowledge of practical and everyday mechanical and scientific concepts.
  • Observation and design sensitivity: The ability to identify and critically evaluate hidden properties in everyday objects, people, situations, and events. Paying attention to specific details, analysing, reasoning, categorising, inferring, and predicting. The ability to recognise subtle differences in visual properties and aesthetic outcomes.
  • Environmental and social awareness: A general understanding of environmental factors such as climate, population, water, vegetation, pollution, weather, natural resources, and so on, and how they affect product design, image, infrastructure, and the environment. Awareness of the social and cultural connections to design, the history of the designed artefact, and socially responsible and environmentally sustainable design solutions. History of art, sculpture, and literature.
  • Analytical and logical reasoning: The ability to look at information, whether qualitative or quantitative in nature, and identify patterns within it. The ability to evaluate opinions, arguments, or solutions using appropriate criteria. The ability to detect hidden bias or assumptions, as well as whether evidence and arguments support conclusions. The ability to use logic and structured thinking to determine from a short passage which of several statements is the most accurate response to a posed question. Data analysis, brain teasers, and patterns.
  • Language and creativity:  Skills include reading comprehension and grammar knowledge, as well as the ability to think creatively, distinguish innovative options, and think outside the box.
  • Design thinking and problem solving: Skills include using visual analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols, understanding complexity, identifying problems, generating alternatives, evaluating options, and selecting solutions.

Part B: 

  • Drawing: The ability to draw products, people, or scenes in proportion while maintaining good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.

What are the academic qualifications required to write the UCEED entrance exam?

Candidates who have passed all 5 subjects in their Class 12th (or equivalent) exam in the year before or the same year as the UCEED exam are eligible.

Is there an age limit for UCEED entrance exam?

Candidates belonging to OPEN/EWS/OBC-NCL categories can attempt the UCEED entrance exam until age 25 and candidates belonging to SC, ST, or PwD categories can attempt the exam until age 30.

How many times can I write the UCEED entrance exam?

Candidates are allowed to attempt the exam only 2 times, in two consecutive years. Please note that the score is valid only for the year in which you appear.

When can I retry if I fail the UCEED entrance exam?

If you fail at UCEED ones, you can attempt again next year.

What is the exam syllabus for the UCEED entrance exam?

The UCEED entrance exam has a duration of 3 hours and consists of 2 sections. Section A comprises visualization and spatial ability, observation and design sensitivity, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, language and creativity, & design thinking and problem-solving. Is there a fee to apply for the UCEED entrance exam?

The fee for female candidates and candidates from the SC, ST, and PwD categories is 2,000 INR. For candidates from other categories, the fee is 4,000 INR. This applies to foreign nationals with certificates issued before March 2021. For foreign nationals with certificates issued after March 2021, the fee is 420 USD for candidates from SAARC countries and 525 USD for candidates from non-SAARC countries.

Does the UCEED entrance exam have negative marks for wrong answers?

Yes, in Section A of the exam, there is a penalty for incorrect answers: -1 mark for Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and -0.71 mark for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ).

The registration for the UCEED entrance exam typically takes place in October each year, while the exam is usually conducted in January.
