Online Coaching for CEED Entrance Exam
The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is a national-level test conducted by IIT Bombay. It is the gateway for admission into prestigious postgraduate design programs like M.Des at IITs, IISc, and other top design institutions across India.
CEED evaluates a candidate’s aptitude for design through areas such as visual perception, creativity, logical reasoning, problem-solving, communication skills, and design sensitivity. Unlike regular entrance exams that focus heavily on theoretical knowledge, CEED emphasizes design thinking and practical application of creativity.

Pattern of the CEED Entrance Exam
The CEED entrance exam has two parts: Part A is computer-based, and Part B is written on paper. Both sections are compulsory, and together they make up a three-hour test.
Part A (Computer-Based, 1 Hour, 150 Marks)
This first part is objective and has three formats of questions.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): 8 questions, 4 marks each. There is no negative marking. Candidates are required to enter numbers using a virtual keyboard.
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): 10 questions with more than one possible answer. Full marks are given for choosing all correct options, partial marks are given if only some are right, and a penalty of 1 mark for wrong picks.
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): 26 questions, 3 marks each, with only one correct choice. In this section for each wrong answer the penalty is 0.5 marks.
These questions are designed to test aptitude in visualization, spatial and logical reasoning, observation, language, as well as environmental and social awareness.
Part B (Written, 2 Hours, 100 Marks)
This section is completely descriptive. Students are expected to answer in the booklets provided at the exam hall.
It focuses on:
- Freehand drawing and sketching ability
- Creativity and idea generation
- Sense of form and aesthetics
- Visual composition
- Problem analysis and design thinking
Part B typically consists of 5 questions, each carrying around 20 marks. Negative marking does not apply here.
Important Points
- Both sections must be attempted.
- Part A works as a qualifying round; Part B is checked only if Part A is cleared.
- The exam language is English throughout.
- Part A emphasizes aptitude and reasoning, while Part B measures creativity and design skills on paper.
CEED Eligibility
To appear for the CEED exam, students must meet certain conditions.
Educational Background
- A degree, diploma, or postgraduate course of at least three years after 10+2 is required.
- Final-year students who will complete their program by July of the year of exam can also apply.
- The GD Arts diploma (10+5), if completed by July of the year of exam, is equally accepted.
Age and Attempts
There is no age cap for CEED. Students are free to attempt the exam as many times as they wish.
Reservation and Support Provisions
- Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD categories in line with Government of India rules, and certificates must be produced at the time of admission.
- Candidates with orthopedic or visual impairments are allowed the use of a scribe for Part A, provided they follow the official procedure.
Institute-Specific Requirements
- Qualifying in CEED alone does not guarantee admission. Each institute sets its own rules on eligibility. For instance, IITs and IISc normally ask for a four-year bachelor’s degree as the minimum.
- Each institute frames its own admission criteria, and these often cover aspects like qualifying marks or length of study.

What is the Syllabus for the CEED Exam?
CEED doesn’t just check drawing; it looks at how you think. The first part of the paper usually tests things like how well you can visualize, use spatial reasoning, solve analytical problems, read and use language, and notice details. Questions also include social and environmental awareness, as design is closely connected to real-world contexts. This section is objective in nature and is meant to check aptitude. Part B moves to descriptive answers and focuses on sketching, visual communication, problem-solving through design, and sensitivity to form and aesthetics. By combining these two parts, the exam looks for originality of ideas as well as the ability to express them with clarity.
