When I first started helping students navigate their design career choices, one question kept coming up again and again: “Should I prepare for NIFT or NID?” And honestly, it’s one of the most important questions you can ask yourself before diving headfirst into months of preparation. Both are prestigious, both are government-backed, and both promise incredible futures in design. But they are not the same, and choosing the wrong one could mean years of misalignment between what you love and what you’re studying.

In this article, I will walk you through everything you need to know, from exam patterns and courses to fees and career paths, so you can make that decision with confidence.

NIFT vs NID: Key Differences

Before getting into the details, let me give you the big picture. NIFT stands for the National Institute of Fashion Technology, established in 1986 under the Ministry of Textiles. It operates across 20 campuses pan-India with around 4000 seats, making it the country’s premier institution for fashion education. NID, the National Institute of Design, is an autonomous body under DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) and is globally recognized for its rigorous, studio-based design pedagogy.

The core difference I always highlight to my students: NIFT leans heavily into fashion garments, textiles, merchandising, and the business of fashion & style. NID, on the other hand, is broader and more rooted in industrial, product, communication & design thinking. If you see yourself in a fashion house, NIFT is your world. If you imagine designing a chair, a logo system, or an interactive experience, NID may be a better fit.

NIFT vs NID: Entrance Exam Overview

NIFT Entrance Exam (NIFTEE):

Conducted once a year by NTA (National Testing Agency) on behalf of NIFT
Two-part written exam: Creative Ability Test (CAT) - 3 hours, pen-and-paper; and General Ability Test (GAT) - 2 hours, computer-based.
Followed by a situation test (3D model-making) for B.Des shortlisted candidates, or a Personal Interview for PG candidates
B.FTech admissions are based solely on GAT scores

NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT):

Two-stage exam: DAT Prelims and DAT Mains

NIFT offers seven undergraduate degree courses (4-year B.Des and B.FTech programs) including:

NID offers B.Des and M.Des programs in specializations such as:

At NID, the Mains stage carries the decisive weight. Your portfolio, your studio performance, and how you communicate your design thinking in the interview determine everything. Begin building your portfolio early, not a week before the exam.

NIFT vs NID: Eligibility Criteria

NIFT Eligibility:

UG (B.Des/B.FTech): 10+2 from any recognized board; maximum age of 24 years as of August 1 of the admission year (5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD)
PG (M.Des, MFM, M.FTech): Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, or a 3-year undergraduate diploma from NIFT/NID

NID Eligibility:

B.Des: 10+2 from any stream; General/EWS: born on or after July 1, 2006; Reserved Categories: born on or after July 1, 2003
M.Des: A four-year Bachelor’s degree, or a four-year diploma in Design/Fine Arts/Architecture, or a three-year degree (with all exams completed by June); General/EWS: born on or after July 1, 1995
Final-year students can apply provisionally

Stream restrictions? None. I’ve seen science, commerce, and humanities students crack both exams. What matters is your passion and preparation, not your Class 12 stream.

NIFT vs NID: Fee Structure

NIFT fees for the 4-year B.Des and B.FTech programs have been rising steadily, crossing the ₹13 lakh mark in 2025–26, with the total payable semester-by-semester. For PG programs (M.Des, MFM, M.FTech), the 2-year fee is approximately ₹6.46 lakh. All NIFT campuses follow the same fee structure for Indian students.

NID, on the other hand, is the pricier of the two, with total program fees exceeding ₹18 lakh. B.Des annual fee is approximately ₹3–3.5 lakh, with variations in hostel, mess & living cost, by campus. For students comparing value, NIFT sits in the middle ground between IIT Design (the most affordable) and NID.

Both institutions offer merit-based scholarships and financial aid. My advice: don’t let fee structure alone drive your choice. The return on investment at both institutions, when you build the right skills and network, far outpaces the investment.

NIFT vs NID: Career & Growth Opportunities

After NIFT, graduates typically step into roles such as:

Fashion Designer, Textile Designer, Fashion Stylist, Apparel Merchandiser
Fashion Communication Manager, Brand Consultant

NID graduates, with their broader design training, often move into:
