Every year, I watch talented B.Arch aspirants lose seats they genuinely deserved. This is often not because their JEE Paper 2 rank was insufficient but because they misunderstood how JoSAA operates. Some filled in their choices without reviewing their options. They chose Freeze when they should have chosen Float. Some even confused NATA eligibility with JEE Paper 2 eligibility and arrived at the counselling portal completely unprepared. In this guide, we aim to ensure that you don’t make these mistakes.

What is JoSAA and Why Does It Matter for B.Arch?

JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, is the centralised body that manages seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and government-funded technical institutes across India. For B.Arch aspirants, JoSAA is the path to some of the most respected architecture schools in India, including SPA Delhi, SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada, and the B.Arch programmes at NITs such as NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, MNIT Jaipur, VNIT Nagpur, and several others.

One point that causes significant confusion every year is that NATA scores are not accepted at any JoSAA institution. If your target is SPA Delhi or any NIT architecture programme, only your JEE Main Paper 2A rank will be considered. NATA is relevant for state-level counselling processes like MahaCET and ACPC, which operate independently of JoSAA. You can apply to both systems in parallel. However, do not assume that NATA has any role in admissions through the official JoSAA portal.

The Two B.Arch Routes Through JoSAA

Before registering, understand which route applies to you. The first route covers SPA Delhi, SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada, all NIT B.Arch programmes, and GFTIs. Eligibility here requires your JEE Main 2026 Paper 2A rank, a minimum of 75 percent aggregate in Class XII (65 percent for SC/ST/PwD candidates), and a board result from at least five subjects. This is the route most B.Arch aspirants will follow.

The second route is for IIT B.Arch programmes at IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Varanasi. This requires qualifying JEE Main Paper 1, then JEE Advanced 2026, and then clearing the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test), which is a separate drawing-based test conducted by the organising IIT. Choice filling for the AAT route opens after AAT results are declared on June 7, 2026.

How to Register and Fill Choices for JoSAA 2026

Registration and choice filling are the most critical stages of the JoSAA 2026 process, as they determine your entire seat allocation outcome. The following steps outline the complete process to help you with registration, choices, and important deadlines.

Step 1: Visit the official website and register using your JEE Main Paper 2 roll number and date of birth. Do this on June 2, 2026, as soon as the window opens at 5:00 PM IST.
Step 2: Search specifically for B.Arch programmes and add them in order of preference. List SPA Delhi first if it is your aspiration, followed by SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada, and then NITs ranked by your preference. Fill in the maximum number of choices the system allows.
Step 3: JoSAA will display two Mock Seat Allocations: Mock 1 on June 8 and Mock 2 on June 10. These show where you would be placed based on your current choice list. Study them and reorder your choices before the final submission.
Step 4: Pre-upload all necessary documents between June 2 and June 11, as JoSAA strongly advises. Having these ready in advance avoids delays if a seat is allotted.
Step 5: Pre-paying the seat acceptance fee within the same window is strongly recommended. This payment is fully refunded if no seat is allotted to you.

Note: The registration and choice filling window closes on June 11, 2026 at 5:00 PM IST with no extensions under any circumstances, as per the official Business Rules.

JoSAA 2026 Fee Structure

The JoSAA 2026 fee structure involves two key payments depending on your category and the stage of seat allotment. Understanding what is refundable and what is not before making any payment decision is essential. The table below outlines the applicable fees for each candidate category.

Note: The Partial Admission Fee is never refundable once paid. Pay it only after making a firm final decision between your JoSAA seat and any state CET seat received simultaneously.

Documents to Prepare for JoSAA 2026

Pre-upload your documents during the choice filling window. The portal does not send separate email or SMS alerts for document queries. It is important that you log in daily during active rounds to check for them. Failure to respond to a document query within two to three days results in seat cancellation and a Rs. 5,000 deduction from any refund. You will need:

SPA vs NIT

NITs offer strong B.Arch programmes but within broader engineering campuses. Neither is categorically superior, but the experience of the five-year programme can be quite different. SPA Delhi carries the most competitive cutoff among non-IIT options. SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada offer comparably strong education at relatively accessible ranks. Plan your choice list with this in mind.

The Round Structure in 2026

JoSAA 2026 conducts five rounds of seat allocation, not six or seven as seen in previous years. Round 5 is explicitly designated as the final round. After Round 5, NIT+ system candidates who are allotted seats must pay the partial admission fee, and CSAB takes over for special rounds covering any remaining vacant seats.

Round 1 seat allocation is announced on June 13, 2026. Each subsequent round follows a similar pattern: allotment, fee payment and document upload window, withdrawal window, and a fee resolution day. Check the website for the exact dates for each round as they are announced.

How to Choose Between Freeze, Float & Slide in JoSAA 2026

After each round of allocation, every candidate who receives a seat must actively choose one of three options. Not choosing is treated as a rejection of the allotted seat, which removes you from all further rounds permanently. If you receive your first-choice programme, only the Freeze option is available. Selecting Freeze confirms the seat and ends your JoSAA participation. This is correct if SPA Delhi or your target NIT was genuinely your top preference.

If you receive a seat that is not your first choice, you have two options. You can choose Float to accept the current seat as a confirmed backup, while JoSAA automatically upgrades you to any higher-ranked preference in a different institute if your rank allows it. Choosing Slide would mean that you accept the current seat but seek an upgrade only within the same institute. Float is almost always the right choice when you have preferences at other institutions still open above your current allotment.
